Starving Artist Cafe opened its doors at 411 Main Street on Tuesday for its first Argenta lunch crowd. I stopped in afterwards for a chat with Paula Martin Morell, one-half of the ownership team, about the decision to move to the right side of the river and what a first-timer ought to try when they come in for a meal. The Argenta Art Gallery in the old Ownes Funeral Home building at Fifth and Main streets is under new management -- and that manager is none other than V.L. (Lynette) Cox, who is oen of the organizing forces behind the Argenta Art Studios at First Presbyterian Church and a former Argenital now living in Lakewood. Lynette was tapped by gallery owner Ken Davenport, and the gallery will now be the exclusive dealer of her works, as well. In fact, starting this week the gallery features all new works, and also represents the artists Doug Gorrell, Kevin Kresse, Brady Taylor and Keri Young. The Arkansas Art Gallery is open Monday through Saturday. During daylight hours the store is minded by Josh Davenport, and Lynette is there in the evenings -- until 6 p.m. Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays and noon to 8 p.m. Saturdays. Drop in your neighborhood art gallery and see the works of some of the area's best artists -- and make sure you say hey to Josh or Lynette and thank them for helping promote the arts in Argenta. So earlier today I'm just sitting at home, minding my own, when I glance out the window and here comes Don Chambers, zipping up Willow Street on -- I kid you not -- an electric tricycle. He was too quick for me to get out there with my camera, but I promise I will track him down and get a picture and the whole story as soon as possible.... Be first to comment this article |

Cornerstone Pub & Grill hosted the Arkansas River Blues Society Challenge over the weekend and Bluesboy Jag (aka Bill Jagitsch), who lives just across the Main Street Viaduct from Argenta and frequently performs at downtown venues, won the solo/duo category. Winner of the band category was teh Port Arthur Band. If you've never seen Jag play, you ought to catch him sometime. He's a one-man band and uses instruments he mostly makes himself, including guitars and amps made from cigar boxes and other containers, and a foot drum made from an old suitcase, as well as a harmonica. The winners of the two categories get all-expenses-paid trips to Memphis to compete in the International Blues Challenge. For a little history on the Arkansas River Blues Society and the list of all the bands that played at Cornerstone over the weekend, click "Read More." Be first to comment this article |

I received the following press release moments ago: Walter “Bubba” Lloyd Jr. filed as a candidate for mayor of North Little Rock on Monday, calling on incumbent Mayor Patrick Henry Hays to authorize funding for a new fire station in the east part of the city without closing any current fire stations.
“The firefighters of this city have been clear in saying that we should not be closing any fire stations,” said Lloyd, a North Little Rock businessman. “But the mayor seems intent on going down this dangerous path. This is yet another example of an incumbent who has been in office far too long, forgetting the real needs of the citizens of his city.”
Lloyd said that if Hays does not take this action now, it will become Lloyd’s first official action as mayor in January. For the full announcement, click "Read More. Be first to comment this article |
