Everybody, say hi to Andrew Scott and Alissa Vaillancourt! They recently moved into 623 N. Orange Street, aka the yellow house at Seventh and Orange. These thoroughly charming folks just moved down from Brooklyn in New York City, and they say they fell in love with the Argenta neighborhood for some of the same reasons they liked it back there: A walkable community with access to public transportation and lots of local businesses to patronize. Walkers Enjoy Wine and Art At The Baker House Article by rhonda from canvasjunkie.com Friday, August 14, 2008, Argenta's first scheduled soft opening"Third Friday ArtWalk", seemed as if it might be the victim of bad weather, but instead it turned out to be a cool and welcome change. The early afternoon rain made set up a little more difficult as the working group, some of their spouses and friends donned rain gear and trudged on to set up the tents, signs and balloons in preparation for the artists. Luckily, by the time the artists arrived the rain had ceased and the skies cleared. Thanks to the hard work of everyone involved, the designated venues were manned by artists just in time. Not just in art galleries and studios, but on front porches, furniture stores, cafes and in tents, art of all types and styles was displayed in unexpected places for everyone to enjoy. All agreed that the Argenta ArtWalk was a great sucess. Looking forward to seeing you for an even bigger and better event September 19. Don't forget to go to canvasjunkie.com and checkout all of the pictures in the events gallery! Be first to comment this article |

Among the many fascinating and talented residents of Argenta (that is to say, all of us) is Jerry Colburn, who lives at Seventh and Willow. Among his multitude of talents is photography, and he's kindly provided me with a whooooole bunch of images he has taken around the neighborhood. They depict bits and pieces of local landmarks, and I'm taking advantage of his kindness to launch an irregular feature I'm calling "Where is...?" I'll post a pic, and y'all try to figure out where it is and what it's of. In addition, anyone else who wants to submit photos for this feature is welcome to. Please send jpegs and keep the file size pretty small, so it doesn't eat into our storage limit too much. Without further ado, here's the first of Jerry's pics: Be first to comment this article |

I sat in on part of the Northeast Lakewood Associated Neighborhoods meeting tonight to hear Jerry Reagan, director of the city's Fiscal Control Department, address questions about the city license peddlers are supposed to have, and there was some pretty interesting input. Let me start off by noting the good turnout: There were about 45 people there, including both Ward 4 aldermen (Charlie Hight, who is facing re-election, and Murry Witcher), Ward 3 Alderman Cary Gaines, Ward 1 Alderman Debi Ross, Ward 3 alderman candidate Steve Baxter, Mayor Pat Hays and mayoral challenger Bubba Lloyd. That's some pretty heavy firepower. (When asked by me, Lloyd did say he plans to come to a Boosters meeting soon, as well. I didn't make it around to the other officials before I left.) When Reagan took the podium, he gave a brief talk before opening the floor to questions. And he opened with this piece of advice: If someone comes to your door offering something you don't want, the simplest and most immediate solution is don't let them in and tell them to go away. That's his policy at his house, he added. That said, the city does license peddlers (door-to-door salespeople) in order to give some legitimacy to those who follow the rules. And Reagan did acknowledge that the current licensing procedure has some shortcomings, which he thought could be addressed. Click "Read More" for the full article. Comments (1) |

Caught this while walking across the Junction Bridge on Monday morning. New fencing along Riverfront Drive by the entrance in the seawall that gives access to the Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum, the Salty Parrot, and the east end entrance to the North Shore Riverwalk. This area is also where the city plans to locate the historic Merci Train box car once it is aqcuired from the city of Helena/West Helena. it would be placed in the area just to the left of the photo, across the driveway from the submariners mural that is shown. Frankly, I think this is a lousy spot to put that box car (and the submariners memorial, while we're at it). It isn't very accessible -- you would have to drive past them to get into the parking lot, then walk out along the entrance drive to reach them. Sure, they're visible from Riverfront Drive, but that's not everything. Frankly, I think the submariners memorial should've been placed on the riverbank above the USS Razorback (which, I also noted whilst crossing the bridge, is starting to look like it needs another coat of paint), and the box car should go in a location that is more easily accessed and has room for people to walk all the way around it. Argenta is part of another rib-tickler this weekend. If you don't normally read the Otus the Head Cat column in the Democrat-Gazette, today's is well worth picking up.... Be first to comment this article |

This just in from Blake Hardcastle, who was a long-time resident of Melrose Divide: I just wanted to let everyone know that my house has sold and I will be leaving the neighboorhood. There is a nice young couple that will be moving in the end of the month. Please everyone make them feel welcome. They are so excited about living in Argenta. Good news for property values on the circle and divide, my house sold for about $90 per sf. I will miss living in Argenta but am looking forward to having some space as my new house is almost triple the size of what I have now. Take care everyone! Comments (2) |

Saw the Arkansas Bar Association's biennial Gridiron Show tonight and really enjoyed it -- especially when they poked fun at Argenta. Using the premise of a gathering at the Governor's Mansion, the motley assortment of guests included the Cult of Argenitals who, when called forward by First Lady Ginger Beebe, declared their intetion to (among other things) relocate the Eiffel Tower to the riverfront. Miz Beebe sent the cultists off to the guest house to hold their secret meeting. And later in the show, when Satan shows up, an aide asks the First Lady if the Prince of Darkness should be directed to the guest house, as well "Oh, no!" says Miz Beebe. "We can't let him near Argenitals!" Probably the best groaner of the night.... For those who're interested in spot-on local political satire and have the money (our mezzanine tickets were $35 bucks a pop), the show runs one more time, Saturday night, at The Rep. I drove past the corner of Seventh and Main a few minutes ago and saw that there's a yard sale going on right now. This is 123 W. Seventh Street, the two-story English revival house that's been in a state of disrepair for so long, but where work is now underway, according to Sandra Smith at the History Commission. So, got some time? Looking for some bargains? Seventh and Main would seem the place to be. Be first to comment this article |
