It seems that the public parking spaces near the ballpark isn't the only area in Argenta where public funds have been used to construct, maintain and light parking spaces that have been reserved exclusively for private businesses. Check out this one of many signs in the parking lot by the submarine and Arkansas Queen.
This means all the bicyclers, walkers and handicapped people who want to use the trail cannot use the only paved lot by the River Trail Heck, the Queen and submarine don't generally open before 10:00 amd so even early morning trail users can't use this lot. So where do you have to park to use the River Trail?

Where?? Over two blocks down river near the bicycle rental building in unnpaved lot as shown here
Is it even ADA compliant to only provide a gravel and grass lot for the River Trail over two blocks away from the trail entrance near the Main Street bridge? Of course, two blocks is nothing to a biker, but two blocks to a wlaker, familly with kids or handicapped person who just want to enjoy the River Trail, two blocks seems like a mile, especially when walking through a mostly empty lot to get to the benches and walkway along the River.
The use of taxpayer money for the exclusive use of two businesses is bad. However what;s worse is the mamagement of the Arkansas Queen using the NLRPD to try and enforce thier exclusive use of the lot. The friday morning of the RV Rally at around 10:00 am the Arkansas Queen management was calling in the NLRPD to keep RV people and others from parking on the lot. Is this any way to treat visitors to our City?
This is probably the case of a private business taking a mile when they should have taken an inch. The City's sin is not recognizing ALL citizens and trail users should have equal access to these parking places. So why not allow trail users to use part of the lot? The row on the north side with a few handicapped spaces marked out would be perfect. Or why not allow trail users to use the entire lot before 10:00 am every day?
Another glitch in the system... Written by Up The Road, on 13-10-2008 08:28 You might also note the the current traffic scheme here has River Trail users riding the wrong way against traffic in order to get to the end of the River Trail. Yep... that little unnamed street is one-way going east. Legally, cyclists have to head out on Riverfront, turn in either at the Arkansas Queen entrance down by the torpedo, or go down another couple blocks to the park entrance across from Dickey-Stephens park. Most ignore the "Do Not Enter" signs, and to further complicat things, there's a bike/rivertrail path painted in the stretch from immediately under the Junction Bridge past a blind corner by the entrance, and leading onto the trail. Do be careful going through there... |
