We are a hair less than 3 weeks out from the annual Argenta Neighborhood Boosters Block Party, y’all, and I am soliciting the help of all good Argenitals to make sure we pull this off in high style. Please click “Read More” to see what’s planned, what’s yet to be done, and what you can do!
Even if you can’t help prepare, remember that the party is from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 26, on the open lot at Fourth and Orange (behind First Presbyterian Church). There will be food, fun and live music, so make sure you show up!
We’ve got a good start on the party. The city will be setting up its big tent and providing tables and chairs, and there will also be some small pop-up tents. Once again we will be entertained by local bluegrass phenoms Runaway Planet. The community garden and the Junior League will both be offering tours of their facilities, which are right across Fourth Street from the party site. The Fire Department has offered to bring down one of its trucks, and Alderwoman Linda Robinson has agreed to help facilitate that, as well as getting the Electric Department to wire up a temporary meter so we can have power on-site. Scott Miller is going to talk to the guys at Capeo about doing the cooking for us again. Jennifer Hamel has volunteered to set up a bocce ball court. There will be a bouncy castle for the kids. Monty Richard will reprise her Faces of Argenta self-portrait project.
But there’s a lot left to do!
Foremost, I need volunteers to help with setup, with food service, and with cleanup. I anticipate we will begin our setup two hours before the party (2 p.m.); food service will last 2 hours or until the food runs out; and cleanup will include emptying trash cans during the party and staying afterward for at least an hour to tidy up. I will post final schedules for these within the week, as well as the total number of volunteers needed for each task. If you are willing to volunteer to do any of these tasks, please e-mail me at

and make sure to include your name and a phone number. Put down a second choice of task for volunteering, please, in case the team you chose first is filled by the time you write in.
If you aren’t able to volunteer your time, you can still help by volunteering stuff. We do have a budget, but I’d like to get as many donations as possible to help keep from beggaring Boosters. Here are some of the things I’d like to see donated:
• Donations. The simplest way to help out if you can’t participate is to make a donation to Boosters.
• Food. I’ll be talking to people who’ve donated our main course items in the past, but anyone who wants to bring homemade side dishes or desserts is more than welcome to. I will be bringing three pecan pies, myself. If you want to bring some food for your neighbors to share, do so! I’d appreciate it if you’d let me know who you are and what you’re bringing, so I can keep track.
• Beverages. We will be serving water and soft drinks on the party site. Beer will be available on private property off the party site. If you can help provide either of those, contact me.
• Chairs. The city has some 40 or so chairs, and I anticipate many people will bring their own. But if you have extras you can bring THAT ARE CLEARLY LABELED WITH YOUR NAME, that would be appreciated. Please let me know how many you plan to bring so I can keep a tally.
• Prizes. If you are a business owner and can provide either an item (or items) or a gift certificate (or certificates), I will use them for hourly door prize drawings. More often, if we get more loot.
• Signs. We’ll want to put out signs reminding everyone of the party, starting late the week of. I’d be happy to accept sign materials, artistic effort and a crew to put them out.
•Anything else. If you think of something I haven’t covered, please let me know.
In advance, I want to thank everyone who’s going to help make this event a big success. The block party is one of the funnest things we do in Argenta every year, and I’d like to make sure ours is the envy of every other neighborhood group.
