I asked Jody Hardin of the Certified Arkansas Farmers Market for an update on his grocery store planned for the 300 block of Main Street, next to Cregeen's, and he replied with the following information: We seem to be delayed a bit on the store, but I'm still hoping for opening this year. I will be perfectly content If this all comes together after CAFM Argenta closes [for the season; see below]. Much of our equipment has be purchased, and we are currently getting our grain mill and bakery up and running for the new store. We need more time, but we are almost ready. We will most likely end the season on October 4, for the official market season, this year. We wanted to go thru October, but the recent hurricaine rains have killed our large fall pumpkin and squash patch, so this is forcing us to make a quick adjustment. Our last day we hope to have a big end of season community harvest festival, with a political speaking venue on the front steps of the US Post office, voter registration at the market, live music, free food from the farmers and volunteers, and activities for children which is being sponsored by the Argenta United Methodist Church. (Jody tells me there may be a new UMC congregation forming in Argenta, and they're going to be working with CAFM. I'm trying to get more details .... — Blogmeister.) BAM will continue to pickup in the same parking lot through the winter, or until Argenta Market opens in the winter, we hope. The other BAM pickup locations will remain the same throughout the winter months, year-round. Next year, CAFM Argenta will open the first weekend in May, if not a little sooner. Big news this weekend: The most beautiful, biggest, juicy, delicious peaches of the season are hitting the market this weekend from Conway orchards. This is all from the Russian farmers, Val and Vivian, who picked them from a Certified Arkansas Farmers' Market member. They will also have four or five varieties of apples from the same orchard. Val expects to have nearly 300 lbs of these giant juicy peaches, which I tasted on Tuesday, and it blew me away for this late in the year. We will likely have the last picking of sugar baby watermelons, plenty of beefalo, and again, live music from Blind Boy White of Little Rock. Also, I will have the sweet red Marconi pepper for sale fresh. I will not be roasting peppers this weekend, however.
