Storm damage on Melrose PDF Print E-mail

A large tree fell in front of Linda Goza's house in the 100 block of Melrose Circle on Tuesday. She told me it took out her power lines, but the city was on top of it and they had electricity back up in short order. I also noticed, while driving around the neighborhood yesterday, that one of the Bardford pear trees in front of the Central Fire Station had split about in half, and several large branches were down around Argenta. Anyone have any other storm stories to pass on?

I was amazed how fast the city responded. Fire dept. came first to keep folks from driving over the downed live wires, street dept. came by several times to see if the electric dept. had responded and when electric dept. came they were professional and took care of the lines in a timely manner. The street dept. quickly had the street cleared.
Now I see the "claw" truck came and took the cut up parts of the tree, but the trunk is still here. Will the street dept. return to finish the clean up is the question? The sidewalk is busted up by the roots and needs to be replaced.
This is one large reason NOT to plant trees in the green space between the street and the sidewalk. The tree that fell was 50+ years and had gone through many weather conditions. I suspect the ice storm of 2000 took the top out of this tree and the one next to it, weakening them greatly.
With all that said, I do thank the city departments for their fast response and concern for our safety. I do feel blessed to live this city.
