Cornerstone Pub & Grill hosted the Arkansas River Blues Society Challenge over the weekend and Bluesboy Jag (aka Bill Jagitsch), who lives just across the Main Street Viaduct from Argenta and frequently performs at downtown venues, won the solo/duo category. Winner of the band category was teh Port Arthur Band. If you've never seen Jag play, you ought to catch him sometime. He's a one-man band and uses instruments he mostly makes himself, including guitars and amps made from cigar boxes and other containers, and a foot drum made from an old suitcase, as well as a harmonica. The winners of the two categories get all-expenses-paid trips to Memphis to compete in the International Blues Challenge. AR RIVER BLUES CONTEST SCHEDULE
David Bogard, Bill Egington and Paul Webber will be judging this event for both nights. In the late 1980's David Bogard was the president of the Arkansas Blues Connection, which was the predecessor to the present Arkansas River Blues Society. David chaired some highly successful Arkansas River Blues Festivals that featured Elvin Bishop, Albert King, John Lee Hooker, Albert Collins, Johnny Winter and Koko Taylor. He is now a retired Circuit Judge. Since his retirement he has recently produced a documentary film on "The Blues Patrol". David is known to play the harp and jam with some of our local bands. Bill Egington is the owner of Arkansas Record and CD Exchange in Levy, Arkansas. Bill is considered by many to be an expert in all things music, including blues. He has owned his own store over 23 years. Paul Webber "DJ Paul" is the host of the Saturday early blues show on KOKY. DJ Paul does the 5 am to 9 am on Saturdays and the smooth jazz on Sunday from
10 am to 2 pm. He has been a life long blues fan and has been spinning the blues in Central Arkansas for over 16 years.
