Everybody, say hi to Andrew Scott and Alissa Vaillancourt! They recently moved into 623 N. Orange Street, aka the yellow house at Seventh and Orange. These thoroughly charming folks just moved down from Brooklyn in New York City, and they say they fell in love with the Argenta neighborhood for some of the same reasons they liked it back there: A walkable community with access to public transportation and lots of local businesses to patronize. It was the prospect of gainful employment that brought them to central Arkansas. Both are Classics scholars; Andrew has finished his Ph.D. at Rutgers University in New Jersey and has been hired as an assistant professor of foreign languages at Hendrix College in Conway, where he will teach Latin and Greek. Alissa is still finishing up her Ph.D. at the City University of New York Graduate Center, so she'll be making a few trips back to Brooklyn yet. So how did they wind up in Argenta? Well, says Andrew, while they didn't really have anything against locating in Conway, they wanted a more urban community to live in. They'd come to the area in May to look for houses, and had been directed to several neighborhoods (including Hillcrest in Little Rock), but really liked Argenta when they saw it. This house was actually listed by Argenta resident and Realtor Christine Slocombe on the day they went back to New York, so they made a second trip to see it after finding it on the web. With the amenities available in the neighborhood, the deal was pretty well closed. "This is where we wanted to live when we drove through," said Andrew. "I think, coming from the city, we like the atmosphere, being able to walk places," said Alissa. "We really like this house, too," Andrew added. Andrew said they paid the asking price of $159,000 for the 1,885-square-foot house. That's ... uh, wait, lemme get a calculator ... $84.35 per square foot, for those of you keeping track of neighborhood real estate transactions. Though they've only been married for two months, they have been a couple for eight or nine years, Alissa says. She is a native of Massachusetts, while Andrew hails from outside Philadelphia, Penn. So, say hello to the latest Argenitals when you get the chance, and make them feel welcome in the neighborhood!
WELCOME!!! Written by amymelisa, on 20-08-2008 12:33 We're so glad to have you all in the neighborhood. More importantly, we love that you bought that house. It's a great place ... it just needed someone to recognize that. |
