Fence work on the riverfront PDF Print E-mail

Caught this while walking across the Junction Bridge on Monday morning. New fencing along Riverfront Drive by the entrance in the seawall that gives access to the Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum, the Salty Parrot, and the east end entrance to the North Shore Riverwalk.

This area is also where the city plans to locate the historic Merci Train box car once it is aqcuired from the city of Helena/West Helena. it would be placed in the area just to the left of the photo, across the driveway from the submariners mural that is shown. Frankly, I think this is a lousy spot to put that box car (and the submariners memorial, while we're at it). It isn't very accessible -- you would have to drive past them to get into the parking lot, then walk out along the entrance drive to reach them. Sure, they're visible from Riverfront Drive, but that's not everything. Frankly, I think the submariners memorial should've been placed on the riverbank above the USS Razorback (which, I also noted whilst crossing the bridge, is starting to look like it needs another coat of paint), and the box car should go in a location that is more easily accessed and has room for people to walk all the way around it.

So, we're getting a rail car for the riverfront, too? I appreciate history as much as anyone... But I'm beyond the point of worrying that our riverfront is going to become the place where "historic" items come to die.
New Nickname?

We can all forget being known as "dog town", which still irritates some even today, because NLR will soon be known as "rust bucket". Coz is right. I can see Mayor Hays (aka "Kevorkian") pulling the drain plug out of more and more boats and now knocking a rail car off the tracks. What the...?

It seems appropriate that these things will be at the foot of the JUNK-SHUN bridge.
