This is to provide a mid-year progress report from the Argenta Community Garden, a project of the Argenta Neighborhood Boosters in partnership with the Junior League of NLR. 2008 has been devoted to site preparation and bed construction, but we've managed to do a little planting too. The photo above shows some of our flowers, and we also have a thriving pumpkin patch (photo on the jump).
In the first 6 months of 2008 the garden received $6,000 in grant funds and more than $12,000 in donated materials and supplies. We built new beds at the front of the property, refurbished the beds around the patio, and finished building half the beds slated for community gardening. Irrigation lines have been installed, and plants are growing in what we call the Welcome Bed, the Herb Bed, the Shade Zone, and half of "the Back-40." There are more than a dozen varieties of herbs, the bell peppers are abundant, and the forecast for pumpkins and turnip greens looks very good. Since January we've had 63 volunteers in the garden; 450 hours of volunteer time!
If you'd like to take a look at our progress, the garden is located at 216 W. 4th Street -- a half block from the Maple Street trolley line on the east side of the historic Manees House, which is home to the NLR Junior League.
In September we will announce plans for classes on gardening and nutrition. If you're interested in becoming a community gardener, teaching a class, or donating time or resources to the project, please contact us at
