The proposed homeless day shelter at River City Ministries (1021 E. Washington Ave., just east of Argenta) will get a public hearing at tonight's City Council meeting. The issue of what to do to provide services for area homeless people has proved a hot potato, politically speaking, as Little Rock's and North Little Rock's governments have been trying to pass it back and forth over the past, what, year or more? In any event, the most recent proposal to have a day service center for the homeless at River City Ministries will finally get a public hearing at the North Little Rock City Council tonight. If you have an opinion, please be sure to show up and let it be known to your elected public servants; don't forget to fill out the speaker's card and give it to the clerk. A few other items also on tonight's council agenda (the full content of which is on the jump): A letter to the mayor from an organization offering to help get the USS Orleck here to add to the Dogtown Navy (as this is a communication, not legislation, there won't be any discussion unless someone brings it up during public comment at the end of the meeting); a resolution regarding the transfer of right-of-way for the Smarthouse Way power line relocation; a resolution appropriating $64,000 for police pay increases and $178,000 for firefighter pay increases; a resolution authorizing a 3 percent raise for "certain full-time salaried officials (excluding elected officials)," and another authorizing a 3 percent raise for full-time elected officials; and more. Remember, because resolutions are a one-and-done item, unlike ordinances that require three readings, all those salary increase issues will likely be dispensed with TONIGHT, so this is your only chance to speak out on how YOUR tax money is being spent. Remember, all the people sitting at that big table in the front of the council chamber work for YOU!

The suspense is killing me... Written by reader, on 15-07-2008 23:57 So what went on at the meeting? Did they really wave their hands and condemn ALL of those properties in one swell foop? Geez... talk about slash and burn. Are the homeless going to have to swim back south across the river just to get something to eat or their teeth fixed? Did Bob Valentine get his sacred little public parking spaces to do with as he pleases? Does he get a badge and a whistle and a radio, too? I'm assuming all the raises went through as well. Is there someplace to find out what went on if you couldn't make the meeting? The website still just says Pearl Harbor was bombed yesterday. |
Council coverage at DogtownWire.net Written by Eric Francis, on 16-07-2008 10:26 Reader, you can visit www.dogtownwire.net for fuller coverage of the City Council meeting. In short, the homeless day center was approved (with the mayor casting the deciding vote) and the parking issue was put off until the next meeting. DJ Smith has more comprehensive coverage at the Wire. |
Thanks, Eric! Written by reader, on 16-07-2008 10:30 Thank you, Eric! Well I'll be darned. I didn't think Hays was ever going to allow for any expansion of any kind of homeless services. He gets points for that. |
